PIEROT
THE CYKLIST

Pierot the cyclist
goes begging on Sunday
an hour from the city
in a striped shirt
like a zebra

The prompter is
Colombina
The children rehearse
with aspiring thespians
The star of the theater
Cinderella

Backstage
in quick step
the puppets dress
the dead are redressed
Pierrot eats in the mess
holding a lamp

Vaudeville
The fine spirit
of a part
from the villa
of the audience
applauds

Pierot
the moon
cradles the shoulder
Colombina in a dream
thinks

In the spring
though
Even better than a bicycle
or train An aeroplane

(Viteslav Nezval)
